Traditional Thai yoga massage is an ancient healing art, sometimes confused with massages that you may have received as a tourist, travelling the country.

The massage is practised on the floor, on a futon mattress, fully clothed, with cushions and bolsters to aid your comfort and relaxation. Oils may be used at the face and head massage stage of the treatment, if chosen, and also in foot massage. Otherwise the treatment is completed through clothing, with no oils or lotions.

As a therapist, I use my hands, elbows, feet, knees to apply pressure on important points on energy lines in the body, alongside gentle Hatha yoga stretches to aid the restoration of the natural flow of energy in the body.

The treatment originated in North India, and travelled to Thailand with the spread of Buddhism. The two traditions have come together in this healing art, with the application of yoga, mindfulness, and the Buddhist Metta, or 'loving kindness meditation'.

Thai Yoga massage has many proven therapeutic benefits, from treating back ache, headache, knee and shoulder problems, pre-menstrual tension, to aiding recovery after a stroke, helping with symptoms of MS, or helping with pain relief in labour.

The treatment can be received by anybody, regardless of age, fitness levels, or flexibility. It aids relaxation, restoration, it energises and improves flexibility.
The Hatha yoga-based stretches are a wonderful addition to a treatment, but not a necessary element. They can really enhance the experience of the massage, if and when these stretches are suitable for the receiver.
It is a therapeutic treatment, so depending on your body's needs, adjustments and modifications will help create a relaxing, or energising experience, it can create a shift in the alignment of the body resulting in balance and harmony.

A typical session may last between 90 minutes and 2 hours, to receive a full and thorough treatment.

We probably all agree that receiving a daily massage would be wonderful, but not necessarily affordable. There are a few things to consider when it comes to deciding on how often a massage might be needed.

-
It might be a wonderful treatment for sports people before or after racing events, to help meet your body's needs.
-
If you are someone who has long-term ailments, or accute conditions, Thai Yoga massage will help with working through tension and managing symptoms.
-
perhaps it is your mental health that draws you to seek out a treatment, in a particularly stressful period in your life.
Listen in and observe how you feel before/during/ and after a massage, what kind of lasting effects it has on you. Please, also discuss these observations with your practitioner so that they can create an effective and personalised treatment plan for you.
